SPECIAL ISSUE:

What can multinational enterprises do to implement sustainable development goals?

The goal of this special issue is to publish the latest research advancements in terms of theory development and empirical research that can guide policy makers in designing policies that maximize MNEs’ contributions to the SDGs. In addition, it can play an important role in helping MNEs with the implementation of the SDGs in their strategies and actions. We hope that our special Issue will also foster greater understanding of the positive roles that MNEs could play on implementing Sustainable Development Goals and of the factors that may affect their strategies. The Guest Editors of this Special Issue will invite original contributions that go beyond the dominant discourse and practices on implementing SDGs by exploring new approaches and pathways. Papers for consideration will be of different kinds: theoretical reflections, analytical models and frameworks, literature reviews, monographs, and case studies.

Transnational corporations play a role in the design, diffusion, and consolidation of sustainable development in the context of globalization and multinational firms. In this timely book European and American contributors analyze this role and explore the complex and dynamic phenomena of economic, political, cultural and legal interactions involved.

In order to understand this interplay, the authors examine the practices and organizational behaviors used by multinationals in sustainable development. They also discuss the evolving concepts that multinationals hold about sustainable development and corporate social responsibility and how companies reaffirm these philosophies through their strategy and organizational practices such as human resource development, marketing, supply chain, information technology, law, and communications. The authors outline an approach to help identify the key details and motivating factors in decision making.

Scholars, students and policy analysts in the fields of business, ecology, economic development and developmental economics and consultants focusing in corporate planning and strategic analysis will find this original collection of great value.

Description

There is no debate about the fact that a “business as usual” approach is an environmentally unsustainable one. Given the magnitude of the environmental challenges the world faces today, extensive changes in corporate strategies and significant innovation advances are absolutely necessary if we are to avoid substantial decreases in our quality of living. Corporations across the world are becoming increasingly aware of the threat of environmental degradation and the growing importance of sustainable business practices. This raises a vital question: How can for-profit firms (and other profit-conscious enterprises such as government organizations) implement more environmentally friendly policies without sacrificing profitability? This innovative volume tackles that complex question, offering detailed recommendations for making strategic technological choices that are economically advantageous, ecologically sustainable and socially responsible.

Expert contributions examine the contextual factors that affect implementation of more sustainable technology and innovation practices, offering a number of empirical methodologies to describe and explain these multidimensional influences. What emerges is a compelling argument in favor of balanced strategies that merge profitability concerns with ecological consciousness, allowing for controlled sustainable development and stable, long-term economic success. Discussion of companies in both developed and emerging countries makes this book useful on a truly global scale.

Students and professors of business, management studies and economics will find much to admire in this path-breaking volume. Managers, policymakers and other practitioners will also benefit greatly from this book's timely and insightful recommendations.

Emerging Dynamics of Sustainability in Multinational Enterprises

John R. McIntyre , Silvester Ivanaj , Vera Ivanaj a Rabi Kar. E Elgar Publishing

Edited by John R. McIntyre, Professor of Management and International Affairs, The Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology, US and Founding Director of its National Center for International Business Education and Research, Silvester Ivanaj, Associate Professor of Information Systems, ICN Business School, Nancy, France, Member of CEREFIGE, a Research Labratory in Management Sciences and Finance, Université de Lorraine and President of MESD Association, France, Vera Ivanaj, Associate Professor of Management Science, Chemical Engineering School (ENSIC), Université de Lorraine, France and Member of CEREFIGE, a Research Labratory in Management Sciences and Finance, Université de Lorraine, France and Rabi Kar, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce SBSEC, University of Delhi, Fellow, ICSI, India

Description

In September 2015 world leaders will gather in New York at the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development Goals. These goals will guide development activities for coming decades. Sustainable development has been debated as a topic of emergent concern at various world conferences, seminars and meetings, over the last three decades. But now with clear and mounting scientific evidence for human induced climate change and biodiversity decline the issue of sustainability has gone from being "emergent", to becoming an emergency.  On the path to sustainability the economic sector and particularly multinational corporations will have to play a central role.  As the main engines of wealth creation corporations they are vital to success of every country's development agenda.  But doing business as usual is not an option any longer, because it is accompanied with unsustainable levels of social and economic inequalities and ecosystem degradation.

This book “Emerging Dynamics of Sustainability in Multinational Enterprises” is an outcome of past debates as it addresses the issues of creating a livable inclusive society to ensure better quality of life for all.  In this context, emerging nations including India face especial challenges and problems which need redressal. After three decades of reforms and convergence towards globalization, it is pertinent and ethical for MNEs to address sustainable development. This book lays more emphasis on the Indian story giving insights of sustainable development and how MNEs and other enterprises are responding to this in their business models. At the same time it tries to explore alternative business models from other parts of the world (such as Africa)  that can ensure sustainable development globally.

This special edition brings together scholarly contributions dealing with multidimensional aspects of MNE sustainability to maintain a balance between their economic motives and concerns for society. Business research experts and practice driven contributors examine the present day dynamics of MNEs involving  innovative techniques, alternate business models, technology integration, economic development and the societal strategies for achieving long term sustainability. Taking a balanced and multidimensional approach, this book discusses a wide range of literature, opinions, empirical models, and case studies dealing with complex dimensions of the thematic issues.

Description:
The Role of Multinational Enterprises in Supporting the United Nations’ SDGs is an exploration of the place of the private sector in implementing select Sustainable Development Goals. Beyond the abundant literature published by the United Nations and journal articles, there are few book-length treatments of the unique role that multinationals play as facilitators of goal implementation and agents of change. This volume aims to stimulate debate and research on MNEs’ best practices, fleshing out many of the seventeen goals through the lens of corporate strategic choices.

Sixteen carefully selected chapters present research advances in both study and best practices format, linking disciplines, knowledge systems, and stakeholders' perspectives to support a more sustainable business model and address the varied challenges on the road to the 2030 Agenda. They comprise a balanced mix of research methodologies: comprehensive literature reviews, theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, integrative reviews, and case studies.

The book will be of use to advanced students, researchers, practitioners, planners, and policymakers worldwide who are concerned with sustainable development and corporate social responsibility issues through the lens of multinationals. Furthermore, the book is designed to be used in graduate courses in business, economics, public policy and on sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Critical Acclaim:
‘While the United Nations adopted a clear set of Sustainable Development Goals around 2015, the likelihood of any country achieving all of these goals by the planned 2030 deadline seems highly unlikely. The reasons behind the slower than expected progress appear to be diverse and multi-cultural, making any type of scientific inquiry into it a major challenge. The editors of this book have taken on this challenge and provided one of the broadest and most comprehensive explanations to date. Their compilation of ideas and research from some of the top scholars around the world provides key insights for thought leaders seeking to accelerate the progress towards saving our planet.’
